Region III Cups came to a close Monday, May 26th after four days of semifinals and finals played at Eagle Harbor Soccer Complex, Orange Park, Fla. The regional tournament crowned Women’s and Men’s Open, Amateur and Over 30 champions; these teams will represent Region III at the USASA National Cups Finals slated for August 7-10, 2008.
In the Women’s Open draw, Dallas Sting claimed the title after defeating Ponte Vedra 4-2 on Sunday’s final. The Dallas Sting hopes for a better year, as they played at the the National Cups Finals in 2007, but losing in the first round of qualification to FC Indiana (WPSL) 6-0.
The Clearwater Galactics (FL) captured a 2-1 victory over the Aria Soccer Club New Stars from South Texas. Both teams qualify for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup 2008, but only the Galactics will attend the USASA National Cups Finals – Men’s Open Cup.
The Kickers (FL) won the Men’s Amateur & Over 30 Championships. On Friday, the Kickers beat Azzurri (TX) 2-1 followed by Sunday’s victory when they defeated Highbury FC (NC) 5-1 in the Over 30 draw. While in the Amateur Cup, the Florida Kickers came undefeated after capturing four games (round robin format) and qualifying for the USASA National Finals with 12 points. The Florida Team has represented Region III in the past, as they lost to opponent AAC Eagles (IL) in the Amateur Semifinal at the 2007 National Cups.
Women’s Amateur competition crowned the Turbo D’Feeters (TX) as the 2008 champions. The Texas team defeated the 2007 National Cups Runner-up Triad United Aces (NC) 5-1. D’Feeters also conquered another USASA National Semifinalist; the Houston Challengers (TX) lost to the D’Feeters 2-1 on Monday.
