Update -- INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 6, 2009) - The Region I Men’s U23 Final was held on July 5th at the Kirkwood Soccer Facility in New Castle, Delaware. Baltimore Bays Chelsea (MD) defeated FC Delco Black Arsenal (EPA), 1-0 to win the 2009 Region I U23 Cup in the Men’s category. (June 29, 2009) - The best of the Northeast took over the U23 Cup at the 2009 USASA Region I Finals at Manalapan Recreation Center in Manalapan, New Jersey on June 27-28.
The Men’s U23 Tournament consisted of 28 teams. Teams were divided into 7 groups, 4 contenders per group. There were two (80-minutes) matches played by each team in group play on Saturday, June 27. Group winners: Suffolk FC U23, Baltimore Bays Chelsea, ABGC La U, Greek American Kosmos, RFC Cobras, Rhode Island SC, FC Delco Black Arsenal and Real Caribe SC advanced to the quarterfinals held on Sunday morning, June 28.
Sunday afternoon witnessed the semifinals between Baltimore Bays Chelsea and Greek American, and FC Delco Black Arsenal vs. Rhode Island SC. Baltimore took over the Greek American, 1-0 to earn a berth to the regional final. FC Delco blanked Rhode Island, 2-0, also advancing to the final.
Up next is the encounter of Baltimore Bays Chelsea (MD) and FC Delco (EPA) on July 5th to determine who will represent Region I at the USASA National Cup Finals in Orlando, July 24-26.
In Women’s U23 play, 10 teams participated and were divided into 3 groups. Each competitor played three (60 minutes) games in group play on Saturday, June 27. Group winners: NJ Rangers Phoenix, FC Bucks, NJ Wildcats and Southampton Crunch made it to the semifinals on Sunday morning, June 28.
FC Bucks (EPA) faced off the NJ Wildcats (NJ) on Sunday afternoon in standard regulation play. Both teams battled it out for the regional title. The NJ Wildcats were defeated by FC Bucks, 4-2.
FC Bucks are the official Region I Women’s U23 Champions and will travel to Orlando for the USASA National Cup Finals on July 24-26.
