Region I Cups Finals Set for June 22


On Sunday, June 22, Region I Cups Finals will be held at United German Hungarian Club, Oakford, Pennsylvania.

Ten teams, including men’s and women’s, will travel to northern Philadelphia to play the regional tournament which is available in the Open, Amateur, and Over 30 divisions. These teams have previously qualified at the state level as well as advanced through regional quarterfinal and semifinal qualifying. Champions will advance to the USASA National Finals being held on August 7-10 in Seattle, WA.

Boston Olympiakos (MA) and Pancyprian Freedoms (E-NY) will dispute the Men’s Open competition. Both teams participated in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in early June, unfortunately neither advanced to the next round. Olympiakos are the 2007 USASA Amateur Cup National Champions.

While in the Women’s Open, Kappa Real Wyckoff (NJ) will meet the United German Hungarian – Elite (E-PA).

The NYGA Atlas (E-NY) will face the Baltimore Colts FC (MD) for a spot in the Men’s Amateur National Finals; whereas the Women’s Amateur competition will be played between the NY Athletic Club (E-NY) and the Danubia Women (E-PA).

The NY Athletic Club (see picture) were crowned Amateur Champions at the 2007 USASA National Cups Finals after defeating Triad United Aces (NC – Region III) 4-2.

Christos/Colts FC also from Maryland will encounter the Danbury United O30 of Connecticut to determine the regional champion in the Men’s Over 30 competition. There will not be a Women’s Over 30 game, as the United German Hungarian O30 Women team has qualified for the 2008 Nationals.

Under 23 Cup Finals will be held in Northern Philadelphia, PA on July 12-13, 2008. The format will be tournament play with group matches on Saturday, July 12, and the semifinals and finals on Sunday, July 13. The tournament will consist of no more than 16 teams with mini-games played through the group phase and semifinals. The finals will be full 90-minute matches with the possibility of overtime.
