Women's National Select Team Goes International!
January 25, 2008

After a one-year hiatus, the
USASA Women’s National Select Team will tour again, this time facing the Mexico Women’s Olympic Team in a two game series, to be played on Friday, January 25, and Sunday, January 27.

The first game kicks off at 3:00 PM in the city of Jalapa, Mexico; players will get a period for training sessions and then return for a second match at the Mexico National Training Center in Mexico City, at 10:00 AM.

The 2008 encounter is made possible by previous relationships with the Women’s Head Coach of the Mexican Soccer Federation (Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, FMF). The FMF, invited by the USASA, previously attended the U.S. Soccer Festival for a number of years, so there is familiarity between the two countries.

The prestigious USASA National Select Team will have the opportunity to show off their talents and get some superior exposure in the neighboring country.

“Players will gain international experience against one of the top national teams in the world” said National Select Team At-Large Commissioner, Bill Bosgraaf, who is going to Mexico along with the team.

“Individual performance could possibly give them the opportunity to be invited to a U.S. National Camp for a chance to make the U.S. Women’s National Team” Bosgraaf added.

Some players attending the Mexico Tour have been selected to play international games in the past. Midfielder Rosie Tantillo of California South is one the players that participated in the 2005 trip.

USASA left for Mexico back in 2005 and played not one but two games vs. their National Team with a 3:2 win and a 0:1 loss.

The following year, the Women’s National Select Team traveled to the city of Villahermosa, Mexico, where they played their U 20’s to a tie, 2:2 then came back strong for the second game and won 3:0.

About the Elite Player Program

The United States Adult Soccer Association’s (USASA) Elite Player Program, originally known as the Select Teams Program, identifies players that exhibit skillful qualities with the intent of becoming a part of the USASA National Select Team player pool. Once selected, the player will be showcased in competitions against professional and international teams. The exposure that our elite players may gain by competing against those professional and international teams can result in professional opportunities for those players. In addition to identifying our elite players, the program provides our coaches the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in highly competitive game situations.
